The Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos

Dear guest, The Three Kings parade is a typical float parade that take place  in Spanish cities in which the Three Wise Men (Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar) and their pages and helpers throw candies and sweets to children on January 5, it is say on the eve of the feast of Epiphany.

The first representation is the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos of Alcoy, which was documented in 1866. Due to circumstances of the time, it was not until 1885 that it is represented continuously to this day. In 1912, a parade was organized in Granada with the aim of collecting toys and giving them to the most disadvantaged children.

In Spain these parades are held throughout the country, but in some cities it has a special tradition. Below I detail the most famous Cavalcades de Reyes in Spain.

La Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos of Alcoy

The oldest parade in Spain (and in Europe) is Alcoy (Alicante). It dates on the year 1866, and has been held every year without interruption. The that parade there are pages, music, dance, shepherds, and King Baltasar parades in the middle of the entire procession. Also, if you are in Alcoy, do not hesitate to visit the Betlem del Tirisiti, a peculiar Christmas puppet theater that was declared a Site of Cultural Interest and is more than 100 years old.

It is another of the oldest in Spain, specifically the second. During the journey, the kings distribute candy to all the children. There are more than 20 floats and more than 100 people participate.

In Madrid many neighborhoods have their own Kings parades. The best known begins in Nuevos Ministerios and goes to Plaza Cibeles, where the Kings will give a message to all the children who go to see them.

The Three Wise Men show their magic in Donosti (Basque name for San Sebastián) by appearing every year in a different area of ​​the city. Before the parade, the Kings will hold a reception at the town hall. In Seville, from the 34 floats on the route, 100 tons of sweets are thrown to the massive public that follows her throughout the journey, which begins at around 4:15 p.m. and that ends at around 10:00 p.m. In addition to the floats of the three Wise Men, being that of Baltasar the one that closes the procession, it opens the float of the star of illusion, another very significant one is that of the grand vizier that circulates before that of King Melchior. Between the floats are interspersed the bands of music, about 600 Bedouins with their faces painted black and also some of them as horse riders.

There are a total of 30 floats accompanying the kings, animation groups, music bands, banners, gegants and cabuts, and a pyromusical show. In addition, they will distribute more than 10,000 candies.
