The sugar refinery Nuestra Señora del Pilar in Motril

This sugar refinery is considered as the best example of the XIX century industrial engeneer, because it is the greatest exponent of industrialization in the Guadalfeo valley, an area which has the most concentration of manufacturing and steam engines of Europe.

This factory is located in the meadow of Motril- Salobreña and it is the symbol of the historical refinery in Motril and of the whole Costa Tropical. Nowadays it is located inside the town.

The first factory was built in 1882 by the Burgos, Domínguez and García factory group for the sugar and alcohol manufacture. At the beginning the sugar refinery had lots of difficulties due to the lack of sugar production in the Peninsula, as well as the disagreement between farmers and manufacturers and the difficult balance between the colonial and the Spanish sugar. Afterwards, the marquis of Squilacce got the property of the sugar refinery and introduced lot of improvements. In 1903, the Spanish General Society of Sugar Refineries controlled the factory. They decided to close the factory for a few years and reopened after the World War I in 1919. The machinery was then modernized in the 1920 decade. The decrease of the sugar manufacture in the meadow made the maintenance of the sugar refinery unnecessary and closed in 1984.

The good state of the factory made it to consider the most significant industrial monument of Andalusia. The sugar refinery Nuestra Señora del Pilar was presented in the International Touristic Fair as one of the most important industrial manufacturer of Europe.
