Hiking route: Mediterranean Path; Salobreña – Beaches of Salobreña and Motril - Vega Baja (15 km)

Published:

Dear guest, this route starts at the Parque de la Fuente de Salobreña in the direction of Supermecado Día, we start the road through the Meadow of Salobreña, until we reach the wall of the river.

We take the direction of the sea and arrive at the bridge that will allow us to pass to the other side of the river. We return to the beach and continue walking along the same sand of the beach to Los Moriscos Golf Club. We continue walking through the sand and we pass by the wall of Villa Astrida, the former summer residence of those who were Kings of Belgium, Baldwin and Fabiola. We continue along the beach and pass a small wooden bridge. We continue between the beach and the road that connects Playa Poniente and Playa Granada. We continue along the beach until we reach a small stage installed on the promenade.

We approach the entrance to the Charca de Suarez, open every day two hours before sunset and on Saturday and Sunday mornings. A perimeter tour, in which you will find observation cabins, will allow you to observe numerous birds. This natural reserve is one of the recommended places for lovers of ornithology. Continuing along the road we reach Camino Alcántara, leaving the road and the sea behind us. We will connect with the Playa Granada Urbanization. Then, we walk down the boulevard to the end. Afterwards, we dodge a small ditch and enter to Camino de Pescadores.

Then we turn right to walk along the plain, or to the left if we want to continue towards the beach.

The Meadow of  Salobreña - Motril was formerly flooded by the sea. This vast plain has been formed by alluvial deposits contributed by the Guadalfeo River. This river is born in Sierra Nevada and for centuries it has been responsible for shaping this fertile meadow. Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs, used this great bay to anchor their boats and protect themselves from storms. Hence it is the name of the river, which means river of the port.

In our days, freshwater springs are still preserved in the valley, since the water table is quite high, which explains the presence of aneal and other riverside shrubs. The end of the road is dotted with farmhouses and small farms.

Returning towards the sea, we will take the bridge over the river, and the path that will take us to the Salobreña promenade, until we reach the Rock that separates the two main beaches of Salobreña, Playa de la Charca and Playa de la Guardia.

Taking the Mediterráneo Avenue, we return to the Parque de la Fuente and finish this beautiful and easy route to do any day of the year.

Dear guest, I recommend you do this route with the family. It is a simple route, which is ideal to do in the spring months accompanied by the whole family and has hardly any unevenness. Of course, take your time as the route has a distance of about 15 kilometers.
