Almuñécar: a town with a lot of history

Published:

Dear guest, the coast of Granada has, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, 70 kilometers from the capital, one of the oldest towns in Andalusia. Almuñécar is not only an important tourist enclave due to the quality of its excellent beaches and rich gastronomy, but also an enclave with a historical past, which begins with its Islamic castle, today San Miguel.

Sexi, the Phoenician city

Near its coast the Phoenicians established one of their most prolific factories, Sexi, 800 years before Christ. Two Phoenician Carthaginian necropolises have been found here: Laurita Necropolis and Puente de Noy.

In Roman times it was the prosperous Sexi Firmum Iulium, known for its salting industries. From here an aqueduct and some hot springs are preserved on the outskirts of the city.

Next to the beach, in the archaeological field of El Majuelo, the traveler can observe the pools where the mixture of fish entrails that the Romans called garum fermented in the sun.

In the year 775, Abderraman I landed on its beaches. He founded the Caliphate of Córdoba and renamed the city Hisn-al-munecab. At this time, Almuñécar was already a strong point on the coast, although it was not possible to speak of it as a city until the 11th century. The city had a port, neighborhoods, suburbs, markets and a major mosque. It was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs several centuries later. It was attacked for centuries, and was a continuous target of the Turkish pirates.

With a historic center declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, the Granada town is built around the fortress of San Miguel, once coveted by the Arabs. Inside it houses the Museum of History of the city.

In some of the beaches of Almuñécar you can enjoy the remains that remain of the old watchtowers.

Important architects and sculptors of the Spanish Renaissance contributed to the construction of the Church of the Incarnation, an example of a Christian temple.

More contemporary are the sculptures erected by the Granada City Council that embellish the population, among others, the Monument to Abderramán I, the Monument to the Phoenicians or the Puerta de Almuñécar in honor of Blas Infante.

The Castillo de la Herradura, ordered to be erected by King Carlos III in 1764, is another of Almuñécar's emblematic buildings.

Dear guest, do not hesitate to visit Almuñécar. It is the town with the greatest cultural wealth and with the most history on the Costa Tropical. You will not regret it!
