The characteristic villages of the Alpujarra of Granada

Published:

The villages of the Alpujarra of Granada are blessed to have unique characteristics, related to the Berbers legacy, that is, belonging to native ethnic groups of North Africa. These characteristics can be found on the white walls of the houses, on the rooftops and in its location on the sides of the hills and mountains.

Lanjarón

The village of Lanjarón is famous for its water, as well as its springs, which allow health and wellness tourism to be one of its main activities. Apart from the mineral water, known nationally and that has its name.

This village of the Alpujarra is very close to Granada (49 km) and in where you will find the Water Museum and a lot of shops that sell the delicious Ham of Lanjarón, runner-up of the competition of the best hams of the Alpujarra (the first Prize was awarded to Trévelez).

You can reach the town of Lanjarón by car or bus. If you like driving, take the A-44 / E902 from Granada.

Capileira y Bubión

Capileira and Bubión have their names from Latin words: capillaria, which means "hair", and bovium, which means "land of oxen" and, particularly, the name of Capileira refers to its location, located at the highest point of the cliff which provides the city with impressive views thanks to numerous viewpoints distributed throughout the village.
Bubión is a true paradise for those who are attracted to anything related to history. In fact, traces of the Roman and Arabic civilizations can be found here.
The city of Capileira has a bus service which tourists use to visit the Mulhacén.
Pitres y Trevélez

Pitres is the main village in the group of villages called La Taha. It is located 80 kilometers from Granada and is identified by the Muslim impact that can be seen in the church tower, built over the old mosque, and by its handcrafted Arab-style tile crafts.
Trévelez aims to be the highest town in Spain, located at 1,476 meters above sea level, and is characterized by being the best producer of Serrano ham in the Alpujarra. Along its streets, you will find plenty of ham and souvenir shops. From the town, you can also start innumerable hillwalking that lead to the highest points of Sierra Nevada.

Órgiva
Órgiva is the most populated village in the Alpujarra of Granada, as well as the capital of the western part of this region. Located in the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, it is easily recognizable thanks to the 16th-century twin towers of the church of Nuestra Señora de la Expectación.
It is the heart of the Western Alpujarra, because of the four main roads that connect Granada to the Tropical Coast and the other white villages of the Alpujarra pass through it. You can arrive by car from Lanjarón on the A-348.
Pampaneira
Together with the small villages of Capileira and Bubión, Pampaneira is the most picturesque white village in the Alpujarra. It is located in the Barranco del Río Poqueira, a narrow gorge in the northeast of Órgiva.
Pampaneira thrives thanks to the tourists who come here and admire its craftwork shops, the narrow white streets, its lively main square and some of the most beautiful carpets in the Alpujarra. In the same way, you cannot miss the legendary Fuente de San Antonio, located near the church. If you are looking for a partner, you have to drink from its waters.
You can reach Pampaneira on the N323 from Granada to Lanjarón, and from Motril, to Órgiva. Then, take the A-720 and turn left at the small roundabout located just before the entrance of Órgiva.
