La Rijana beach: a place to enjoy tranquility

Published:

Dear guest, La Rijana beach is located in the Spanish municipality of Gualchos –Castell de Ferro and near the Sotillo beach, in the province of Granada, autonomous region of Andalusia. It can be accessed by car by taking the N-340 road after the village of Calahonda. This part of the Costa Tropical is the least known by foreign tourists, located near Castell de Ferro, stands out for its crystalline waters, being one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.

La Rijana beach is one of the most fantastic coves that we can find on the Granada coast. It is a bit hidden, although it has easy access. To get to it, you have to walk down a track, which takes us from the parking lot set up in the Zacatín ravine to the beach. Since it is not easy to find, this adds charm to this wonderful beach. This dark sand beach offers exceptionally clean waters, being an ideal place for divers or simply to do a little snorkeling. You can also rent material for sports such as kayaking or paddle surfing.

The Rijana beach is about 250 meters long, and 20 meters wide, which together with the transparency and tranquility of its waters, allow you to experience unique moments.

Historically, the Rijana beach was an anchorage, a water point and a fishermen's protection area. Ships, since the V century, lowered in this part of the coast, to load their holds with water. Since Roman times there have been cisterns that were filled with fresh water from the Zacatín stream. Today there are some remains of the cistern next to the Torre de la Rijana.

The beach is surrounded by escarpments that reach the seabed. At the end of the cove, towards the east, there is a large rock in the sea, which seems as if it had detached itself from the cliff, where the ruins of the 16th century tower stand.

This rock is an ideal place to dive into its waters, and get started in the exciting world of snorkeling. The area is highly appreciated by divers, thanks to its great marine biodiversity making it one of the most beautiful and unique natural places on the Granada coastline. The rock has an orange coral that gives the walls an amazing color. It also has a good number of crevices and passageways where the abundant fauna takes refuge. Lovers of underwater photography have the opportunity to make here good reports. On a walk under the waters of the Rijana we can see from the small and striking Parablennius pilicornis, of yellow, green, and black colors, to moonfish, passing of course through the spirographs or sea feather dusters that open their colored plumes, the octopuses, sea bass, bream, maidens, groupers, conger eels and especially moray eels.

La Rijana beach is considered a Special Conservation Area (ZEC), and is the first non-urban beach in the province of Granada to achieve the “green flag”. This mark is endorsed and certified as a good example of environmental planning, implementation and management according to the ISO 14001 standard.

There is a small bar / chiringuito on the beach, which offers spectacular views, it is a fantastic place to have a drink, at a very reasonable price and contemplate the natural beauty that surrounds us.
